Four facts before you book

Ticket rule
Klook tickets for the Peak Tram cannot be cancelled once booked.
The queue
The Peak says its own timed tickets give no priority boarding.
The climb
The tram rises to 396 metres above sea level on a 1.4-kilometre line.
Sky Terrace 428

Six stations, one climb

Six stations from Garden Road to the Peak

The line has a lower terminus in Central, four intermediate stations and an upper terminus below the Peak Tower. The queue forms at the bottom; everything else on the way up is scenery.

Wikipedia gives an average journey time of five minutes. The Peak puts the climb at 396 metres above sea level.

  1. Central Terminus

Garden Road, beside St John’s Cathedral

The line starts in St John’s Building on Garden Road, a 10 to 15 minute walk from Central MTR station by the Peak’s own directions. This is where the queue forms. The Peak says Octopus cards cannot be used at the terminus gates, though the on-site ticket counters accept them.

  2. Kennedy Road

    The first intermediate station

Wikipedia lists Kennedy Road first of the four stations between Central and the Peak. The Peak says passengers boarding at an intermediate station can pay on the tram with an Octopus card.

  3. MacDonnell Road

    The second intermediate station

Along the whole line the Peak gives the gradient as between 4 and 25.7 degrees, steep enough that the buildings beside the track appear to lean. A 2013 University of Hong Kong study, cited by the Peak, links that effect to the tilted view and your reclined position inside the tram.

  4. May Road

    Where the two cars pass

The line is a single track with a passing loop near May Road, according to Wikipedia. The two tram sets cross here, one going up as the other comes down.

  5. Barker Road

The last stop before the top

The fourth and last intermediate station. The photograph at the top of this page shows a car on the viaduct near here, taken in September 2022, two weeks after the line reopened.

  6. The Peak Terminus

Below the Peak Tower at Victoria Gap

The upper station sits below the Peak Tower, about 150 metres below the summit of Victoria Peak, according to Wikipedia. Sky Terrace 428 is on top of the tower, and the bus station is in the neighbouring Peak Galleria.

The line in brief

A commuter line that became the way up

A railway for the Peak’s first residents

Before 1888, wealthy residents were carried up the slope in sedan chairs. Alexander Findlay Smith, who had worked for Scotland’s Highland Railway, petitioned the Governor in 1881 to run tram routes, and the Peak’s history page says the line was meant to bring visitors to his hotel on the hill. Wikipedia calls the Peak Tram the first funicular railway in Asia.

Rebuilt in 2022 for bigger crowds

The line closed for a major upgrade and reopened on 27 August 2022. Each tramcar now carries 210 passengers, which the Peak splits into 167 seats and 43 standing places, up from 120 before the rebuild. Bigger cars raise capacity, but they do not remove the queue on a public holiday.

Why the line still forms

The Peak says it applies crowd control during public holidays and festive seasons, and it advises buying ahead and arriving before 3 pm in quieter periods. Its own timed tickets manage the flow of visitors but give no priority boarding, and the waiting time depends on how many people come that day.

What waits at the top

The tram ends below the Peak Tower, which holds Sky Terrace 428, the highest viewing platform in Hong Kong. Public roads and a public garden around the summit give free views too, so the choice at the top is which view you want and how much of the day to spend on it.

What a Peak ticket covers

What a Peak ticket covers, and what it does not

Three items arrive with the Klook packages. Three do not, and each is worth settling before you pick a date.

  • A round-trip tram ride

The basic package is a round-trip Peak Tram ticket. Most packages are valid on the date you select, and one is valid for 30 days.

  • Sky Terrace 428 in the combo

A second package adds Sky Terrace 428, the open-air platform on top of the Peak Tower, to the round trip.

  • A fast-lane combo

A third package pairs the tram and Sky Terrace 428 with an exclusive entrance to skip the queue. No package promises a waiting time, so treat the fast lane as a shorter route in, not a stopwatch guarantee.

  • A cancellation or refund

Every Peak Tram package on Klook is non-cancellable. The Peak’s own tickets are non-refundable too, and its FAQ says the date and timeslot cannot be changed.

  • A guaranteed view

The Peak says view quality cannot be guaranteed in adverse weather. It links Hong Kong Observatory webcams so you can check before you go.

  • A ride in every weather

The Peak says the tram and Sky Terrace close when typhoon signal No. 8 or higher is hoisted. The rules for a Klook ticket in that case sit on the Klook package page.

Before you go

Before you go

  1. Pick the date first

Most Klook packages are valid only on the date you select, and none can be cancelled. Check the forecast and your plans before you pay.

  2. Check the view

The Hong Kong Observatory runs webcams at the Peak, and the Peak links them in its FAQ. A clear morning and a hazy afternoon can look very different.

  3. Go before 3 pm if you can

The Peak recommends arriving before 3 pm outside busy periods. On public holidays and festive seasons it applies crowd control at the terminus.

  4. Allow for the walk

The Central Terminus is a 10 to 15 minute walk from Central MTR station, leaving by Exit J2, according to the Peak.

  5. Travel light

Luggage storage is not available at the tram stations or the Peak Tower. Strollers must be folded to 66 centimetres or narrower, and pets are not allowed on the tram except guide dogs.

  6. Leave the tripod behind

The Peak does not allow tripods or lighting on the tram, in the Peak Tower or on Sky Terrace 428, and drones need the management’s permission.

FAQ

Peak Tram questions, answered

Can I cancel a Klook Peak Tram ticket?

No. Klook tickets for the Peak Tram cannot be cancelled once booked, so choose your date carefully. Most packages are valid only on the date you select. The Peak’s own tickets are non-refundable as well.

How do I avoid the Peak Tram queue?

You cannot remove it, but you can shorten or sidestep it. Arrive before 3 pm outside busy periods, book the fast-lane combo that adds an exclusive entrance, or take a bus, minibus or taxi up instead.

Does a timed ticket let me skip the queue?

Not the Peak’s own. Its FAQ says timed tickets help manage visitor flow but give no priority boarding. The Klook fast-lane package is a separate product that adds an exclusive entrance.

Is Sky Terrace 428 worth adding?

It is if you want the highest open-air viewing platform in Hong Kong and are already buying the tram. It matters less if you plan to walk the Lugard Road loop. Weather decides the view either way.

Can I see the view without a ticket?

Partly. Lugard Road and Harlech Road are public roads that loop round the Peak, and Victoria Peak Garden is a public garden. Sky Terrace 428 needs a ticket.

How do I reach the Peak without the tram?

The Peak lists a green minibus from Central, a Citybus route from Central Pier and Exchange Square, and taxis. Walking from Central MTR station to the Peak Tower takes one to one and a half hours.

When is the best time to go?

The Peak recommends arriving before 3 pm in quieter periods and checking the Observatory webcams for visibility. Sky Terrace 428 is open in the morning, afternoon and at night.

What happens in a typhoon?

The Peak says the tram and Sky Terrace close when typhoon signal No. 8 or higher is hoisted. For a Klook ticket, follow the rules on the Klook package page.
